La Planète des Singes/ Planet of the Apes

Tout d’abord petite annonce; j’ai inversé la hiérarchie des pages et des messages : les chapitres du  roman seront désormais dans les pages de mon blog  et je publierai mes  notes d’écriture en message. Et aussi, je ferai une version anglaise !

I loved buses when I was a young boy; their sound, their look, and the hawkers selling peanuts, either boiled or salted, pacing up  and down  the ‘aisle’ sounding like broken records. I would always make a fuss about boarding an  old bus. They were noisy and made lots of smoke. I did enjoy watching the jet of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, if I  was by chance on the right side of the bus. The exhaust pipe was in those days not very  securely  tied and it just  hanged  out on the side of the bus and quite often would knock  again the frame or fall off.

It’s tricky to pick a seat when you  are five. I was five in 1982.  One had to compute the time of the day  and figure out where the sun would be during the trip; the front was too noisy  and at the back there was always some macho guy sitting legs wide apart, taking all the space, selfishly. There was also frequently there a big canvas bag, full to the brim, weighing three tons and impossible to circumnavigate.

 We used to  take the 141 bus to Port Louis. The ‘new road’ as we called it was the new motorway winding its way down to the capital and in those days there were not as many traffic jams. It only took 25 minutes to get to the infernal  blaze of Port  Louis.

 I  can vaguely  recall the TV series based on the Planet  of the Apes. We watched it in mum’s bedroom on our old black and white Sanyo TV. At that time we also watched the incredible Hulk (I used to watch through my fingers because I was scared of Lou Ferino) and  Captain Harlock. I  also remember that old advert for the Mauritius Commercial Bank explaining why it was the BEST…

 I  found this French  documentary about the origins of the planet of the Apes when I  was carrying out some research, you  may  enjoy it, give it a try! Its funny  how each generation has to rediscover old stuff on their own terms ; Marcel and Conrad think that Star Wars  was created by  Lego!   

 Mimi Labat, a legend of Mauritian radio was on air between Noon and 2 pm just  before the oriental language broadcast. The background music, was from  Jean Michel Jarre, I didn’t know it at the time. I had a Eureka moment much later here in London when listening to his Best  of  Vinyl we had just bought.  

J’adorais les autobus quand j’étais gamin ; leur son, leur apparence, et les marchands de ‘pistaches salées et bouillies’ qui arpentaient l’allée centrale du bus en marmonnant la même chose inlassablement. Je ne voulais jamais entrer dans un vieil autobus. Ils faisaient trop  de bruit et de fumée. J’observais toujours le jet de fumée sur l’asphalte quand le chauffeur appuyait sur l ‘accélérateur- il fallait s’asseoir du  bon coté pour cela.

C’est complexe de choisir son siège dans le bus à Maurice quand on a cinq ans (c’était en 1982).  Il  fallait décider l’heure de la journée et  de quel coté le soleil penche, à l’avant le bruit et trop assourdissant, à l’arrière il y a toujours un  gros macho qui écarte les jambes et prend toute la place ou alors une grosse ‘tente bazaar’ qui pèse trois tonnes qui bloque le passage. Quand on allait à Port Louis on prenait le bus 141 qui venait d’Henrietta.  Il passait sur l’autoroute, qui à l’époque n’avait pas beaucoup de bouchons; il fallait seulement 25 minutes pour atteindre la chaleur infernale  Port Louis !   

Je me souviens vaguement de la série sur la Planète des Singes. On la regardait sur notre téléviseur noir et blanc Sanyo. C’était l’époque où l’incroyable Hulk passait à la télé, ainsi qu’Albator… Il y avait aussi cette vielle pub de la MCB, le Best : B, c’est le bénéfice, E c’est l’expérience,  S c’est la  sécurité, T comme toi ! Jetez un œil sur le documentaire que j’ai trouvé en farfouillant un peu. Mon Dieu comme notre mémoire est courte- plus beaucoup de personnes aujourd’hui savent les origines du film ! Conrad et Marcel pensent que Star Wars a été inventé par LEGO !

Mimi Labat parlait tous les jours entre midi et  deux heures sur radio 1, juste avant les émissions en langues orientales. La musique de fonds était toujours de Jean Michel Jarre. Je ne savais pas qu’elle était de lui alors, je m’en suis seulement rendu compte plus tard à Londres, par hasard, alors que nous écoutions le disque vinyl que nous venions d’acheter.
